Einbürgerungstest trainer — practise in English

This is the free trainer for the Einbürgerungstest and the Leben in Deutschland test. The interface is in English; the questions and answers are shown in German exactly as they appear on the exam, with the English translation one tap away. You practise the 310 questions that actually apply to you, run unlimited timed mock exams, and keep your progress without creating an account.

Getting started

  1. Pick a name and your federal state. The name only labels progress on this device, so several people can share one browser. Your Bundesland decides which 10 state questions you learn, and you can change it at any time.
  2. Work through the topics. Start untimed with History and Responsibility and with Democracy and elections — the two largest blocks in the question catalog.
  3. Sit a mock exam. After about a week, a timed mock exam under real conditions shows you where you stand.
  4. Collect your mistakes. Questions that keep going wrong move into My Focus and get repeated there, instead of disappearing into the next random round.

You learn 310 questions, not 460

The official BAMF catalog contains 460 questions: 300 general ones for the whole of Germany plus 10 extra per federal state, so 16 × 10 = 160. Your exam only ever uses the state questions of one state — the one where you file your citizenship application. That makes your real workload 310 questions, and the trainer assembles exactly that set as soon as you choose your state. All 16 sets are listed under federal states.

What the trainer does

Questions with the answer and an explanation. Every question comes from the official catalog. After you answer you see not just whether you were right but why, with a short note on the principle, the year or the institution behind it. Each question also has its own page in the question catalog for reading and linking.

Unlimited mock exams. A mock exam draws 30 general questions and 3 state questions, with the clock running for 60 minutes. Both the questions and the four answer options are reshuffled every time. That matters more than it sounds: with a fixed practice sheet you gradually learn the position of the correct answer rather than its content, and on exam day it sits somewhere else. See mock exams for how to use them well.

My Focus. Your personal list of the questions that keep going wrong. Instead of going through all 310 for a fourth time, you drill the thirty that actually count.

Exam vocabulary. More than 80 terms that appear in the questions and almost nowhere in daily life: Gewaltenteilung, Verordnung, Volljährigkeit, Wahlgeheimnis. Each with an explanation, a translation and an example sentence in the vocabulary list.

Translation and read-aloud. The exam text stays German because the exam is German. You can show the English version whenever a phrasing is unclear, and you can have questions and answers read aloud at an adjustable speed.

Progress without an account. Answered and correctly solved questions are counted so you can see how much of the catalog is still open. That needs no registration: your progress, your focus list and your settings live only in your browser's storage, the site is hosted in Germany, and there is no advertising. Clear your site data and everything is gone.

Einbürgerungstest or Leben in Deutschland?

Both exams use the same catalog, the same format and the same 60 minutes. The difference is purpose: Leben in Deutschland is the closing exam of the orientation course, where 15 correct answers is often enough. The Einbürgerungstest requires 17. If you score at least 17 in Leben in Deutschland, it counts as an Einbürgerungstest pass as well — saving you an appointment and €25. The background is in the citizenship test guide and the Leben in Deutschland guide.

Aim for 33 out of 33

17 of 33 is the pass mark, not the target. If your practice scores sit just above it, you have no margin on the day for nerves or two questions you misread. Because the catalog is public, finite and stable, a perfect score is a realistic goal: 20 to 30 minutes a day over two to four weeks is usually enough. More answers about registration, cost and retakes are in the FAQ.
