Failed the Einbürgerungstest — What Now?
Failing is not the end. You can retake the test as many times as needed. What matters is learning from the result instead of repeating the same mistakes.
Key takeaways
- Pass mark: 17 of 33 — no minimum score per topic area.
- Retake any time — no statutory waiting period.
- Each attempt costs €25 (new registration at a test centre).
- With preparation, most candidates pass — practise until you have a margin above 17.
- Analyse weak areas by topic, not just memorise individual questions.
What does “failed” mean?
You answered fewer than 17 of 33 questions correctly. There are no partial marks per topic — only the total count matters (§ 1 Abs. 3 EinbTestV).
You receive a result notice. For naturalization you need a certificate with at least 17 marks — achievable on your next attempt.
Retakes — the rules
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How many retakes? | Unlimited |
| Waiting period? | None by law |
| Cost per attempt | €25 |
| Registration | New registration at a test centre |
| Same questions? | Same catalog, different random paper |
Analyse your weak areas
- Review mock exams in Passbereit: which topic areas fail?
- Practise history, basic rights, and your state separately — the most common gaps.
- Read explanations, not just the correct answer.
- Check state questions — 3 of 33 exam questions come from 10 state questions.
- Re-register only when mock exams consistently show 22+.
Recommended path
Plan at least 2–3 weeks of focused practice before your next date. Use the 14-day study plan as a structure — or extend it to 3 weeks.
Avoid re-registering immediately without fixing weak areas. Each failed attempt costs €25 and more weeks waiting for results.
Practise with focus
My Focus in Passbereit automatically collects questions you got wrong — ideal for targeted review.
Frequently asked questions
Will a failed attempt count against my naturalization application?
No. Only a passed certificate with at least 17 marks counts. How many attempts you needed is irrelevant to the naturalization authority.
Can I retake at a different test centre?
Yes. You are not tied to the same VHS — any accredited centre can register you.
Do I lose my integration course completion if I fail the LiD?
Integration course pass requires 15 marks. Naturalization requires 17. With 15–16 in the LiD you passed the course but would need to retake for citizenship.
